Georges Laraque described his difficult life of sports in a book “The story of the NHL’s unlikeliest tough guy”. He wanted to share his biography with others. Georges Laraque noticed also about administration of anabolic steroids in the National Hockey League (NHL). These facts about intake of steroids in NHL seemed to be quite interesting. The Canadian press published just the quotes linked with this endless subject. The rest of the book was ignored.
Georges Laraque claimed in an interview that he had never taken performance-enhancing drugs. Moreover, he noted that he hadn’t mentioned any names of the athletes that had taken steroids. The book is indeed an autobiography.
The author mentions about some ways to determine whether a hockey player uses steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs or not. Here are 2 ways described by him:
1. A hockey player whose weight has been increased by more than 40 pounds in a short period of time must be applying performance-enhancing drugs.
2. A hockey player that reduces his weight significantly in short period of time to correspond to the rules of the Winter Olympics must be using steroids.
Undoubtedly, all sportspersons, including hockey players, know that they will be tested for steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs by the World Anti-Doping Agency. That’s why they stop using the banned preparations certain time before the Olympics. It helps them to avoid probability of testing positive for these medications.
But this is not the chief idea of the book. George Laraque wanted to show that a child is required to put many efforts to become a famous professional sportsperson in spite of racial intolerance and bullying. But the press is not interested in this theme. The media wants to publish stories connected with administration of steroids by sportsmen.
The auhor did not have a goal to name the hockey players that utilized steroids.
Undoubtedly, the media asks George Laraque to mention the names of the NHL’s players that use steroids.
