When it is proclaimed that the Pittsburgh Steelers intend to play, reporters seem to have responsibility to write about their links with steroids. They put efforts to create a steroid scandal and to define any supposed relations of this team with it.
Mike Fish of ESPN showed the same attitude, when the Pittsburgh Steelers played in the 2009 Super Bowl. Thisjournalist turned to be lucky in writing news about the Pittsburgh Steelers and steroids.
Although reporters are not always successful, when it comes to connections of a team or a sportsperson with performance-enhancing drugs before a competition, the situation is changed, if it is said about the Pittsburgh Steelers. Journalists like writing about their history, about the lesson related to anabolic steroids which took place in 1970s.
David Fleming wrote about historical lessons of the Steelers before a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers. This person noted about time, when the NFL hadn’t yet banned usage of steroids. So, according to certain sources, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ players took steroids in the late 1970s. It is mentioned in the 1991 book “False Glory: The Steve Courson Story” that over 70 % of the offensive linemen of the Steelers used steroids.
It must have been true but you have to understand that application of steroids wasn’t prohibited. Why are the Steelers blamed, if intake of steroids was permitted?
Jim Haslett told the New Orleans Saints that the Steelers had won a lot if times in 1970s and in 1980s because of steroids. According to this trainer, the players of the team became much more powerful due to intake of steroids.
But it is necessary to be careful here. The Pittsburgh Steelers were not the first football team that took steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. There were other professional football teams that administrated steroids even in well-organized way.
Matt Chaneygave the better explanation related to administration of steroids in football. He noted in his book “The Spiral of Denial: Muscle Doping in American football” that the Pittsburgh Steelers hadn’t to be blamed for the steroid revolution in football. There was another team that had to be condemned for this factor. The San Diego Charges applied steroids before the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1960s.
Although the Steelers administrated steroids in 1970s, it is impossible to confirm that they won due to steroids. There were also players of other teams that applied these preparations too. Nevertheless, the Pittsburgh Steelers were successful!
