The American mixed martial artist Chael Sonnen is allowed to apply anabolic steroids. The physician Timothy Trainor confirmed that this sportsman really experienced hypogonadism.
What does this condition represent? Hypogonadism is connected with insufficient secretion of the hormone testosterone. Doctors ordinarily recommend hormone replacement therapy in order to treat this condition.
This fighter has received a therapeutic use exemption (TUE). Thus, this athlete is allowed to utilize steroids for medical purposes and meet Anderson Silva at UFC 148 in July 2012.
According to indications given by Sonnen’s physician, he has to apply injections of Testosterone Enanthate and Testosterone Cypionate twice a week. The measures which are prescribed have not been revealed. But under establishments of the Nevada Athletic Commission, blood serum levels of testosterone in this athlete should remain within normal range on the morning after the fight against Silva.
According to the doctor Trainor, those who fight, having TUE, should be tested on the morning after the match to determine whether they have taken something right before the competition.
Trainor believes that testosterone can produce performance-enhancing effects, if it is taken right before the fight. He states that injections must not be applied in the days before a match in order to prevent elevated testosterone levels.
But it seems that the NAC is not aware that steroids produce benefits linked with enhancement of performance, not only if they are taken right before competitions. Intake of steroids influences essentially on performance during trainings before competitions. And the results remain even after athletes stop administering them.
Chael Sonnen had enhanced testosterone levels at UFC 117. He confirmed that he had tested positive because he had been on TRT. He appealed his suspension and it was reduced to 6 months from one year. But Chael Sonnen didn’t have any TUE that time.
